February 13, 2015 5 Comments

It’s official – fat is good for us!  This week’s British Medical Journal tells us that a diet of ‘real food’ containing plenty of natural fat could be the key to living a long and healthy life.  Wowza!  Where did that medical u-turn come from? Apparently our obsession with low-fat food has contributed to the…

WHY MY 2015 CHEESE BOARD WILL BE ALL SWISS – JERUSALEM ARTICHOKE SOUP WITH SWISS CHEESE

February 6, 2015 8 Comments

You know that healthy glow Swiss people always have?  Well, it turns out their über radiance comes not from the pure Alpine air they imbime, nor from their relentless hiking and ski-ing in sub-zero temperatures. Oh no – nothing as dramatic as that! It’s actually the cheese they eat.  Yes, I know we’re all…

WILL CARBOHYDRATES KILL ME? WHOLEGRAINS AND MILLET PANCAKES

January 23, 2015 4 Comments

To carb or not to carb, that is the question – particularly when it comes to age-related, degenerative disease. The battle lines are being drawn in the fight for our health. If that sounds melodramatic, bear with me. The traditional view of our nutritional needs is encapsulated in the NHS-approved food pyramid, with plentiful portions…

WHY TEA AND CAKE WILL IMPROVE YOUR MEMORY AND HELP YOU LIVE LONGER

January 15, 2015 16 Comments

No doubt you’re dieting, detoxing or drying out – it is, after all, the month of penitence, atonement  and resolutions (read ours here and here).  But it’s dark n’ cold out there and my body’s begging for sugar and carbs.  To top it all, my eldest daughter is mid-exams and comes home starving and exhausted. And…

BOOSTING IMMUNITY FOR 2015, SOUP AND A SALAD

January 9, 2015 1 Comment

Last week Annabel posted about her key Kale and Cocoa resolution for 2015: to get more vegetables into her family’s diet, aiming for SEVEN portions a day (you can read why seven is the new five here). So here’s my New Year’s health resolution: to boost my immunity so I don’t get any sodding awful…

CHRISTMAS, CALORIES AND ‘HEALTHY’ CAKE!

December 12, 2014 8 Comments

Talk about timing: it’s almost Christmas and here comes a report suggesting that the key to ageing slowly is cutting calories – especially carbs. That’s just mean if you ask me. But, without being Bah! Humbug about it, it’s worth taking a moment to look at the stats and science as we start the seasonal…

MORE GOOD NEWS FOR THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET – HOW TO EAT BRUSSEL SPROUTS

December 5, 2014 7 Comments

How comforting to think about the Mediterranean Diet as we head towards the shortest and darkest day of the year!  Wine, sun shine, peaches … Sounds good, right?  Yes, I know Brussel sprouts don’t have quite the glamour but bear with me because the big nutritional news this week has been another study endorsing the…

CARING, TURMERIC AND A RECIPE FOR SALMON PILAFF

November 28, 2014 7 Comments

This weekend feels like the start of the long march to Christmas – with all the presents, all the parties, all the food and all the mayhem that entails. For anyone who takes care of anyone (which is most adults, to be honest) it means even more juggling than usual, fitting in the children’s activities…

We’ve always been a little wary of brain training We’ve always been a little wary of brain training exercises. There’s certainly plenty of them out there. They’re well researched, but the ultimate conclusion is often that they make you really good at playing that particular game with no substantial real-world benefits.
We’d usually rather read a book, play a board game or do a puzzle for a little cognitive sharpening.

But new research linked specific cognitive training designed to improve speed of processing to a 25% lower risk of developing dementia across 20 years, compared to the control group.

You’ll have heard that sitting is the new smoking, You’ll have heard that sitting is the new smoking, our sedentary lifestyles are killing us etc etc

But is all sitting equally bad? it appears not. ‘Active sitting’ - where we’re engaged in a brain-healthy activity like reading or playing stimulating games, doesn’t have the same detrimental impact as slumping in front of the TV.

It’s what we do when we’re sitting that counts.

It is - finally - starting to get a little lighter It is - finally - starting to get a little lighter in the UK.

But our lives are still full of artificial light, causing our body clocks to drift. The end result? Circadian disruption linked to higher risk of metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, depression, and cognitive decline.

That light-dark imbalance also results in worse sleep and therefore also potentially poorer glymphatic clearance (the brain’s overnight clean up).

But there’s so much we can do to bring light into our lives - at any time of year.

Some of our favourite activities - reading books, Some of our favourite activities - reading books, drinking tea, eating cheese (yes, we know how to live!) - have been linked to a longer, better life.

A new study suggests that cheese  can lower our dementia risk – although no one is quite sure how or why. This new study found that eating 50 grams (1.76 ounces) or more of high-fat cheese a day correlated with a lower risk of developing dementia.

A recent summary  of previous studies which concluded that regular reading improved brain connectivity and function, consolidating neural connections and enhancing brain connectivity, while also improving memory and concentration and slowing down cognitive decline.

And a study published just before Christmas found that tea-drinking protects against osteoporosis.

All good things! There’s more on the blog - linked in stories
