HOW TO TIPPLE IN SOBER OCTOBER

October 7, 2022 10 Comments

I’ve always enjoyed a tipple. And in the past we’ve written about the age-well joys of champagne, red wine and beer.  They’re still age-well joys, of course, but in smaller and smaller quantities. Not just because we’re getting older (although that’s a perfectly valid reason for drinking less – the ageing body finds it increasingly…

WHEN TO FALL ASLEEP – AND FOR HOW LONG?

November 12, 2021 16 Comments

I’ve been thinking about sleep recently. We all know it’s important. But how important? And what else should we know? Three years ago, when I met Professor Hornberger, an expert in dementia and ageing, he was adamant that the quality of sleep mattered most – not the quantity. He explained the importance of slow-wave sleep…

COULD WINTER SEA SWIMMING LIFT YOUR MOOD?

March 7, 2021 4 Comments

Last week Teenage Daughter asked me to go for a sea swim with her.  It was February. It was cold. I had just rolled out of my deliciously warm bed. But having spent the last year saying ‘No’ to all her requests (Can I see a friend? No. Can I go out? No. Can I…

WHAT IF THERE WAS ONE VITAMIN THAT SLOWS AGEING? AND A LONGEVITY-BOOSTING RECIPE

January 29, 2021 2 Comments

Wouldn’t it be lovely if there was just one thing we could do, one food to eat or one supplement to take which would slow down ageing? It would make everything so simple. But ageing is such a complex process that one quick fix is as likely as flying pigs. There has, however, been a…

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN YOUR BODY AS YOU AGE, AND A BRAIN HEALTH MASTERCLASS

January 16, 2021 12 Comments

Hi there, how are you feeling? I was so hoping that 2021 would be a fresh start for us all, but here we are (in the UK at least) back in lockdown and facing a rather grim first few months of the year. So I’ve been looking at fresh starts in other ways – not…

HOW TO BEAT STRESS, ENHANCE NEUROPLASTICITY AND A FABULOUS TREAT FOR YOU

August 7, 2020 11 Comments

These long months of uncertainty have left me feeling stressed and often unrested, even after a decent night’s sleep. How’s our current state of semi-normality impacting you? Reconnecting with life as much as we can, while knowing that it’s not the same, creates a constant, low thrum of stress. Everybody is facing uncertainty and challenge…

COFFEE AND YOUR HEALTH: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

September 20, 2019 24 Comments

This is me, about to take – I kid you not – my first sip of coffee in 20 years. I gave up when living in California in 1999 (my body was a temple, and all that). The withdrawal symptoms were so debilitating (like a 10-day flu bug) I vowed never to go back. But…..20…

IMPROVE YOUR MEMORY BY WALKING BACKWARDS, THROWING PARTIES AND OTHER THINGS BESIDES…

April 27, 2019 Leave a Comment

One of the questions we’re often asked is: How can I improve my memory? Few of us beyond mid-life can claim to have a perfect in-our-twenties memory. But is this natural ageing or can we do something about it? After I hit my head on a London pavement and cracked my skull, my memory disappeared…

CAN YOU EAT TO BEAT POLLUTION?

March 15, 2019 4 Comments

Worried about pollution? We are too. This week, researchers announced that air pollution is now killing more people than smoking. The new study focuses on ozone and PM2.5 (they’re the tiny particles of Particulate Matter invisible to the naked eye but able to penetrate our lungs and – possibly – cross into our blood). The…

Look, we know not many people have round-the-clock Look, we know not many people have round-the-clock access to a sauna. But Susan found one in a hotel she was staying at recently, there’s one in our local gym and Annabel found plenty on her summer holiday in Finland.

A growing number of studies attest to the longevity-enhancing benefits of routine forays into a sauna. Much of the research has been instigated in Finland where sauna (pronounced to rhyme with downer) has existed forever.

So how does sauna help us age well? The extreme heat activates heat shock proteins which researchers think can maintain the healthy functioning of our cells.  As we get older, the proteins in some of our cells start to misfold and collapse. They then clump together forming plaques, including the plaques thought to cause Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Heat shock proteins – triggered by a sauna stint and possibly by hot baths – appear to prevent the misfolding and collapsing of cellular proteins, as well as clearing out those that have already misfolded. Which is to say they keep our cells in good shape.

If you’re new here, we’re Susan and Annabel, long-time friends turned longevity writers. We started blogging about our quest to age well almost a decade ago (!) - you can find the blog at agewellproject.com or via the link in our bio.

As working mums, we started looking for simple, science-backed ways to make the best of the second halves of our lives. We wanted to improve our own health and reduce our risk of the chronic conditions of ageing. When we started writing, Susan was caring for her mum, who had dementia, and Annabel has also faced challenges with her family’s health.

Along the way, the blog became a best-selling book, The Age-Well Project, and further books have followed. You can find out more about us individually @annabelabbs and @susansaundershealth

The blog is packed with posts on the latest research into the science of longevity, and how we make sense of it in our own lives. And there’s also loads of lovely age-well recipes - all approved by our families!
