April 18, 2025 14 Comments

Come Walk With Me First things first, the 2025 London Festival of Walking is hosting a free conference (2 May) on strolling, featuring the neuroscientist, Professor Shane O’Mara, and yours truly (that’s me, Annabel). If you’re interested in the biology, neuroscience, politics or simply the joys, of walking, you can claim a place by registering…

HOW TO WALK TO IMPROVE YOUR MOOD

May 20, 2022 6 Comments

Last week was Mental Health Awareness Week and, in preparation for my guided walks, I binge-read lots of the latest studies. During the pandemic, depression and anxiety were experienced by an additional 28% of us. Sadly, we’ve not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels. In this post I’ll cover what’s new and what’s emerging. And I’ll…

COULD WINTER SEA SWIMMING LIFT YOUR MOOD?

March 7, 2021 4 Comments

Last week Teenage Daughter asked me to go for a sea swim with her.  It was February. It was cold. I had just rolled out of my deliciously warm bed. But having spent the last year saying ‘No’ to all her requests (Can I see a friend? No. Can I go out? No. Can I…

SEEKING POSITIVITY AND FOODS WHICH MAKE US HAPPY

June 6, 2020 2 Comments

I’ve been thinking a lot about positivity this week, and trying to stay optimistic in testing times. 2020 is shaping up to be a year of seismic shocks, but I’m hopeful we can face up to the need for change in so many areas of our lives. Our treatment of the environment, our health care…

WHAT WE NEED NOW: COLD SHOWERS AND WARM RECIPES

October 6, 2019 5 Comments

barley risotto, wheat free, vegetarian, dinner

We’ve had a bit of a week of it at The Age-Well Project: Annabel’s computer blew up, leaving her without thousands of precious documents, notes and creative work. I’ve been juggling a sick teenager, an injured puppy, a defunct boiler (so no hot water) a broken dishwasher. And, to cap it all, Tuesday’s storms saw…

WHY GOALS MATTER (AND I DON’T MEAN FOOTBALL)

May 10, 2019 4 Comments

I’ve just set myself a ridiculous goal: to give a speech in French. To French people. I haven’t spoken French for a very long time. I got an embarrassingly bad grade at A-level, over thirty years ago. But the event is in November – so I’ve got plenty of time to brush up – and I’ve…

HOW PLANTING A TREE COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE

December 3, 2018 3 Comments

I spent a day planting trees last week. It was an uplifting experience with a HUGE number of healthy ageing benefits. In fact, I think it could be top of the charts for age-well activities – see below! I volunteered at the Woodland Trust’s First World War Centenary Woods at Langley Grove, Surrey. Each tiny…

WHY LONELINESS IS AN EPIDEMIC and BAKED ZA’ATAR CHICKEN

October 22, 2018 2 Comments

What does it say about us as a nation that we need a Minister for Loneliness? It’s both uplifting that the issue is being addressed, and heart-breaking that it needs tackling in the first place. We are living through an epidemic of loneliness, where smaller households, longer working hours, a more transient workforce and increased…

GREEN SPACE IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH

July 27, 2018 10 Comments

Do you have time in the countryside planned this summer?   I hope so. If not, find a bit of green space nearby (city parks are great) and aim for some Green Time every day. We’ve been singing the praises of trees and the great outdoors for some time now, but in the last few weeks…

It is - finally - starting to get a little lighter It is - finally - starting to get a little lighter in the UK.

But our lives are still full of artificial light, causing our body clocks to drift. The end result? Circadian disruption linked to higher risk of metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, depression, and cognitive decline.

That light-dark imbalance also results in worse sleep and therefore also potentially poorer glymphatic clearance (the brain’s overnight clean up).

But there’s so much we can do to bring light into our lives - at any time of year.

And are you enjoying the lighter mornings?!

Some of our favourite activities - reading books, Some of our favourite activities - reading books, drinking tea, eating cheese (yes, we know how to live!) - have been linked to a longer, better life.

A new study suggests that cheese  can lower our dementia risk – although no one is quite sure how or why. This new study found that eating 50 grams (1.76 ounces) or more of high-fat cheese a day correlated with a lower risk of developing dementia.

A recent summary  of previous studies which concluded that regular reading improved brain connectivity and function, consolidating neural connections and enhancing brain connectivity, while also improving memory and concentration and slowing down cognitive decline.

And a study published just before Christmas found that tea-drinking protects against osteoporosis.

All good things! There’s more on the blog - linked in stories

How much should we worry about digital dementia? How much should we worry about digital dementia?

The term isn’t new. It was coined by German neuroscientist and psychiatrist Dr. Manfred Spitzer in 2012.

He argues that outsourcing memory to search engines, the constant ‘pings’ of notifications, and multitasking, can weaken memory consolidation and reduce attention. He also suggests this can lead to a decreased ability for deep thought, reduced self-control, and  social issues.

How can we protect the brain? Research published a few weeks ago found engaging in creative pursuits, like dance, music or visual arts, is associated with a measurable slowing of brain ageing. You’ll have heard this before, but what’s interesting in this study is that the research team looked at how this might happen.

Annabel’s just spent a month working and walking i Annabel’s just spent a month working and walking in the Swiss Alps. So that meant a lot of time climbing a lot of mountains!

Unsurprisingly, she found herself drawn to the latest studies of movement. She wanted to know what all the uphill huff and puff was really doing, not to mention the downhill drag on knees and limbs, and the slipping and sliding through mud and snow.
