Want more ‘energy’ to age well? Here’s how

June 24, 2022 6 Comments

I was asked to write an article for Healthy Magazine recently about how we improve our energy levels. My first job was to define energy! We all want plenty of ‘energy’ but what does that mean? In scientific terms, energy production in our bodies is fired up by our mitochondria: the miniscule ‘batteries’ found in…

WHY YOU NEED TO ROCK AND REST

June 10, 2022 7 Comments

I’m normally urging our readers to walk, dance, play ping pong, cook, garden and so on. But not today. That’s because I’ve been investigating the extraordinary power of short rests. Not naps, but something researchers call ‘wakeful rest’. It’s not something that comes naturally to us at the Age-Well Project.  Both Susan and I have…

How to age well like the Queen!

May 27, 2022 2 Comments

I know our Queen has incredible advantages when it comes to longevity: palaces, retinues of staff, the country’s best doctors….. but isn’t she ageing well?! And, despite her obvious privileges, there are lessons we can all learn from Her Majesty as we head towards the Platinum Jubilee  here in the UK. So a trumpet voluntary,…

HOW TO WALK TO IMPROVE YOUR MOOD

May 20, 2022 6 Comments

Last week was Mental Health Awareness Week and, in preparation for my guided walks, I binge-read lots of the latest studies. During the pandemic, depression and anxiety were experienced by an additional 28% of us. Sadly, we’ve not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels. In this post I’ll cover what’s new and what’s emerging. And I’ll…

It’s nearly May, which is National Walking Month – an initiative started in 2007 by the American Heart Association to encourage more people to … walk! And so this month I’ll be examining some of the latest studies into various aspects of walking. If you’ve read 52 Ways to Walk you’ll know that I went…

A conversation, and cultivate awe for better brain health

March 31, 2022 Leave a Comment

The Age-Well Project began as a conversation between Annabel and I about how we could fit healthy ageing into our lives and how to make sense of the growing mountains of longevity research. Eight years ago, that conversation became a blog, and three years ago the blog became a book. But it’s still essentially an…

HOW TO EAT RIGHT FOR YOUR GENES – AND A FREE WEBINAR

March 23, 2022 18 Comments

Do you remember Professor Valter Longo’s 2016 book, The Longevity Diet?  We’re not fans of ‘diets’ per se, but we read it with great interest. I was particularly struck by Prof Longo’s advice to eat as our forebears did. “My best advice,” he wrote, “is to eat at the table of your ancestors.” So how…

New research has named the diet of northern Tanzan New research has named the diet of northern Tanzania as one of the healthiest in the world.

Researchers from the Netherlands and Tanzania evaluated the diet traditionally eaten by arable farmers in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. They consume many fibrous, polyphenol-rich plants and a fermented banana beer called mbege. Fibre intake can be up to 90g a day, three times more than that recommended here in the UK. And Brits only average around half that amount. The fibrous Tanzanian diet has a hugely beneficial impact on gut health, and is linked to better immunity, reduced inflammation and - of course - ageing well.

Journalist @msmirandamcminn watched her mother battle dementia for 10 years. Determined to reduce her own dementia risk, Miranda worked with Susan for three months.

She said, ‘I am convinced that we could all benefit from following this programme…. [it] has given me better clarity than I had at the age of 30”

How many steps are you walking in summer? When it’s warm, it’s tempting to find a shady spot and do very little, we know

However, can we politely suggest you continue to get your daily steps in? We’ve been enjoying evening ambles and dawn saunters.  Get to the sea, a forest or mountains/hills if you can.

What about that magic 10,000 steps number? After all, recent studies suggest that somewhere around 7,000-8,000 daily steps is perfect for older people, with benefits tailing off after that.
Moreover, everyone now knows that the 10,000 step ‘rule’ was devised by a Japanese marketing company who liked the neatness of the  (untested) 10,000 number.

But it seems that 10,000 steps a day banishes inflamm-aging…. want to know more? It’s all on the blog - link on bio and in stories

Lymphatics and longevity - what you need to know Lymphatics and longevity - what you need to know

The lymphatics are the body’s drainage system: keeping fluids in balance, flushing away toxins, supporting the immune system and removing cellular waste – the build-up of which causes oxidation (rusting!) in the body. If the lymphatic system isn’t operating optimally, we’re more likely to experience chronic inflammation. So many of the conditions linked to ageing – from arthritis to heart disease, dementia to insulin resistance – are rooted in this inflammation.

So, look after your lymphatic system and it will help look after your longevity
