WHY A BOOK IS EVERYONE’S BEST FRIEND AT CHRISTMAS

December 16, 2019 2 Comments

My Christmas list is very short this year: a few books and that’s about it. In The Age-Well Project we wrote about the extraordinary power of reading to keep the brain youthful. But reading books does so much more than firing our neurons. Books provide escape, relaxation, new perspectives and outlooks. They fire the imagination,…

WHY WE NEED BOARD GAMES (AND EXERCISE) FOR CHRISTMAS

December 5, 2019 8 Comments

The nights are drawing in, and the days are getting colder. Our brains may be telling us to hunker down, to switch into hibernation mode. But all the research says otherwise. A report out last week suggests that instead of becoming less active as we age, we need to become more active, whatever the weather….

THE SCIENCE OF AGEING – EXPLAINED VERY SIMPLY!

November 22, 2019 6 Comments

Look at this picture – what a gorgeous place to talk all things Age-Well! It was a privilege to speak at an intimate workshop at the beautiful Water Lane Farm in Gloucestershire earlier this week. The hardest thing for me when I’m speaking at events and coaching clients is explaining the science of ageing: what’s…

November 8, 2019 3 Comments

Are you good to your gut? We do hope so. The link between gut health and longevity is key to our Age-Well Project, so we’re excited about THREE new pieces of research providing simple ways to boost both. A quick refresher: when we say ‘gut health’ we mean the variety, quality and quantity of our…

AND THE BEST TIME TO EXERCISE IS …

October 30, 2019 11 Comments

Anyone remember being told to eat a banana before exercising? Or only to exercise after consuming… protein … carbs … a handful of almonds … whatever…? Well, it turns out that the best time to exercise is on an empty stomach. A very empty stomach. According to research published last week, the perfect time to…

WHY WE’RE CELEBRATING MENOPAUSE

October 18, 2019 11 Comments

Here we are at the Cheltenham Literature Festival, signing books and having a whale of time. We love chatting to people about The Age-Well Project, answering your questions and hearing your stories. At every event we speak at, we’re asked about menopause. Either during a Q & A session or, quietly, afterwards. Our response is…

WHY WE NEED TO WALK BESIDE WATER

October 11, 2019 22 Comments

Three weeks ago I walked (backpacked actually, yes even at my age!) alone from Bordeaux to Toulouse. I cheated a bit and took a couple of trains, but I still clocked up between 20 and 35 kilometres every day, with a large pack on my pack. I’ll admit: I was very nervous before I left….

WHAT WE NEED NOW: COLD SHOWERS AND WARM RECIPES

October 6, 2019 5 Comments

barley risotto, wheat free, vegetarian, dinner

We’ve had a bit of a week of it at The Age-Well Project: Annabel’s computer blew up, leaving her without thousands of precious documents, notes and creative work. I’ve been juggling a sick teenager, an injured puppy, a defunct boiler (so no hot water) a broken dishwasher. And, to cap it all, Tuesday’s storms saw…

COFFEE AND YOUR HEALTH: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

September 20, 2019 24 Comments

This is me, about to take – I kid you not – my first sip of coffee in 20 years. I gave up when living in California in 1999 (my body was a temple, and all that). The withdrawal symptoms were so debilitating (like a 10-day flu bug) I vowed never to go back. But…..20…

A HEALTHY STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING CAKE? YES, REALLY…WITH WALNUTS!

September 13, 2019 12 Comments

Today I’m sharing a recipe for my healthy cake of the moment. We’ve been making this a lot chez Streets because I wanted my children to eat brain-boosting walnuts while they revised for their exams last term. And what better way than by offering them a slice of sticky toffee pubbing cake? Sugar-free, packed with…

There’s a piece in @telegraph online today about There’s a piece in @telegraph online today about Susan’s coaching programme Better Brain Framework. Journalist @msmirandamcminn watched her mother battle dementia for 10 years. Determined to reduce her own dementia risk, Miranda worked with Susan for three months.

She said, ‘I am convinced that we could all benefit from following this programme…. [it] has given me better clarity than I had at the age of 30”

How many steps are you walking in summer? When it’s warm, it’s tempting to find a shady spot and do very little, we know

However, can we politely suggest you continue to get your daily steps in? We’ve been enjoying evening ambles and dawn saunters.  Get to the sea, a forest or mountains/hills if you can.

What about that magic 10,000 steps number? After all, recent studies suggest that somewhere around 7,000-8,000 daily steps is perfect for older people, with benefits tailing off after that.
Moreover, everyone now knows that the 10,000 step ‘rule’ was devised by a Japanese marketing company who liked the neatness of the  (untested) 10,000 number.

But it seems that 10,000 steps a day banishes inflamm-aging…. want to know more? It’s all on the blog - link on bio and in stories

Lymphatics and longevity - what you need to know Lymphatics and longevity - what you need to know

The lymphatics are the body’s drainage system: keeping fluids in balance, flushing away toxins, supporting the immune system and removing cellular waste – the build-up of which causes oxidation (rusting!) in the body. If the lymphatic system isn’t operating optimally, we’re more likely to experience chronic inflammation. So many of the conditions linked to ageing – from arthritis to heart disease, dementia to insulin resistance – are rooted in this inflammation.

So, look after your lymphatic system and it will help look after your longevity

We went to Stockholm! And, of course, it didn’t We went to Stockholm! And, of course, it didn’t escape our notice that the Swedes have a fantastically age-well lifestyle and a greater life expectancy than us here in the UK (although only by a year).

The Nordic diet of foods traditionally eaten in Scandinavia plays a role in this: whole grains, fish and game. I brought some smoked reindeer meat home with me, not sure I would recommend. Vegetables, berries, ferments, oily fish and sea food are all longevity superfoods - we ate some incredible lumpfish roe and oysters while we were there. And Annabel had one of her favourites, nettle soup, not once but twice.

Coffee intake, clean air and the concept of ‘lagom’ - balance - all play a role too. Find the lowdown on the blog agewellproject.com and linked in stories
