WHY WRITING BY HAND IS GOOD FOR YOUR BRAIN, A PRIZE DRAW TO SPUR YOU ON, AND SIMPLE STUFFED PEPPERS

July 10, 2020 10 Comments

Has anyone else noticed the surging number of people writing in public?  In London, where I walk beside the River Thames every day, I’ve become increasingly aware of people sitting on benches, writing.  Not playing with their phones or ipads, but writing by hand in note books and on paper. I began lamenting the loss…

How diet boosts brain power: the science

January 18, 2020 4 Comments

Annabel and I read hundreds of research articles each month to keep up to date with the latest findings on healthy longevity. We’ve learned to decode the different methodologies to understand which are the most meaningful, and relevant, to The Age-Well Project. There’s such a broad span of research methods, from investigating the insides of…

VITAMIN D – TO SUPPLEMENT OR NOT TO SUPPLEMENT?

January 26, 2018 11 Comments

As readers of this blog will know, I take no vitamin supplements. Except in December when I normally take a vitamin D supplement for a few months. But this year I didn’t. Until yesterday, when I did. Confused? I was too. And that’s the point. We are bombarded by constantly changing and often opposing information…

WHY YOU NEED TO NURTURE YOUR LOVED ONES: ONE-POT COD WITH RED VEGETABLES

May 19, 2017 8 Comments

Yesterday I visited a friend whose Easter was spent battling for the life of her son.  Not in a sophisticated London hospital but on a remote African island. Her twelve-year old son’s appendix burst somewhere between Madagascar and a tiny island, reachable only by a three hour choppy boat ride.  The island had no hospital,…

WHICH AGE-WELL DIET IS A WINNER FOR WEIGHT LOSS?

January 22, 2016 3 Comments

Bear with me writing about diets again, but it is still January. And what does ‘diet’ really mean? The word is usually associated with weight loss, of course, but there are ways to alter eating habits to bring both health benefits AND weight loss where needed. The honest truth is that many of us could…

SHOULD I GO PESCETARIAN? AND PRAWN, PEA AND PEPPER PAELLA

July 12, 2015 Leave a Comment

Bit of a bombshell from my daughters this week when they announced they have gone pescetarian. One has some clearly well-considered thoughts about animal welfare, the other is more concerned about the quality of meat they are served at school (which does sound awful to be honest). I’ve said that I’ll support them in their…

Feeling gloomy about the end of summer?  Stop right there!  If Susan’s last post on Vitamin D and dementia didn’t get you up and out, then tune in to this week’s BBC Horizon programme (http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b04g507y/horizon-20142015-5-allergies-modern-life-and-me) on the explosion of allergies in the developed world.  Horizon covered not…

Can you live without a bacon sarnie? And a recipe for stuffed vegetables

June 20, 2014 2 Comments

“New health fears over processed red meat” is not a headline that any bacon sarnie lover wants to see. But a study published in the American Heart Association journal called (and get this for a chirpy title) ‘Circulation: Heart Failure’ indicates that those eating over 75g of processed meat a day (about 3 rashers of…

Look, we know not many people have round-the-clock Look, we know not many people have round-the-clock access to a sauna. But Susan found one in a hotel she was staying at recently, there’s one in our local gym and Annabel found plenty on her summer holiday in Finland.

A growing number of studies attest to the longevity-enhancing benefits of routine forays into a sauna. Much of the research has been instigated in Finland where sauna (pronounced to rhyme with downer) has existed forever.

So how does sauna help us age well? The extreme heat activates heat shock proteins which researchers think can maintain the healthy functioning of our cells.  As we get older, the proteins in some of our cells start to misfold and collapse. They then clump together forming plaques, including the plaques thought to cause Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Heat shock proteins – triggered by a sauna stint and possibly by hot baths – appear to prevent the misfolding and collapsing of cellular proteins, as well as clearing out those that have already misfolded. Which is to say they keep our cells in good shape.

If you’re new here, we’re Susan and Annabel, long-time friends turned longevity writers. We started blogging about our quest to age well almost a decade ago (!) - you can find the blog at agewellproject.com or via the link in our bio.

As working mums, we started looking for simple, science-backed ways to make the best of the second halves of our lives. We wanted to improve our own health and reduce our risk of the chronic conditions of ageing. When we started writing, Susan was caring for her mum, who had dementia, and Annabel has also faced challenges with her family’s health.

Along the way, the blog became a best-selling book, The Age-Well Project, and further books have followed. You can find out more about us individually @annabelabbs and @susansaundershealth

The blog is packed with posts on the latest research into the science of longevity, and how we make sense of it in our own lives. And there’s also loads of lovely age-well recipes - all approved by our families!
