AIR PURIFIERS AND THE PERFECT SAUCE TO PEP UP STEAMED GREENS

June 21, 2019 4 Comments

We’ve been promising to write about air purifiers for a few months.  Thank you to the readers who reminded us to get on with it! As it happens, our timing is good: experts have just called for air purifiers to be installed into the schools most affected by air pollution. And because green veggies have…

WHY WE NEED MORE LUTEIN: GREEN BUTTERBEAN SOUP

January 18, 2019 3 Comments

To lose one’s sight as one gets older seems terribly cruel. Can you imagine not being able to enjoy a painting? Or missing the splendour of February’s first crocuses? Or not being able to see your first grandchild? But there’s good news: researchers now think many cases of age-related macular degeneration (AMD, better known as…

ANOTHER COMPELLING REASON TO FAST? HORTA ON TOAST

May 11, 2018 8 Comments

So far, the only intervention able to dramatically extend healthy life appears to be … fasting, otherwise known as Caloric Restriction (CR). Studies – on animals – suggest that regular fasting can extend healthy life by up to 30%. Susan recently wrote about her experience of fasting after trialling Professor Longo’s Longevity Diet, and we wrote…

VITAMIN D – TO SUPPLEMENT OR NOT TO SUPPLEMENT?

January 26, 2018 11 Comments

As readers of this blog will know, I take no vitamin supplements. Except in December when I normally take a vitamin D supplement for a few months. But this year I didn’t. Until yesterday, when I did. Confused? I was too. And that’s the point. We are bombarded by constantly changing and often opposing information…

THESE NUTS COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE (YES, REALLY!)

November 17, 2017 2 Comments

Sometimes it is the simplest things which can make the biggest difference – like eating a handful of nuts each week. New research published this week revealed that eating 28g of nuts each week can reduce the risk of heart disease by up to 23%. I got the kitchen scales out to weigh 28g of…

CAN A KIWI FRUIT HELP YOU SLEEP? PEACH AND MOZARELLA SALAD WITH SMOKED ALMOND PESTO

June 16, 2017 8 Comments

Teenagers everywhere are pushing through, red-eyed and exhausted, to the end of exam period (in the UK, at any rate). My eighteen-year old daughter is no different. With a head full of hay fever, she spends her days revising before collapsing into a night of inadequate sleep and waking at dawn as the light streams…

EAT LESS MEAT AND LIVE LONGER? AND BAKED STUFFED SWEET POTATOES

November 6, 2015 3 Comments

If you’ve read recent headlines, you’d be forgiven for thinking that eating a sausage is tantamount to writing a suicide note. Last week the World Health Organisation placed processed meat in the same carcinogenic category as cigarettes and alcohol. Regular red meat was placed in the category below, making it a ‘probable carcinogen’. Crikey! This…

POLYAMINES – THE NEW SECRET WEAPON FOR AGEING WELL & MOROCCAN SPINACH AND CHICKPEAS.

October 16, 2015 21 Comments

The big ageing news in the last week has been polyamines (yes, new to me too!).  Thanks to research from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, headlines about a new ‘wonder anti-ageing diet’ involving polyamines were splashed across several newspapers last week.  I liked the sound of that, but to flesh out these extravagant…

We’ve been thinking about this a lot recently: i We’ve been thinking about this a lot recently: if grieving is an inherent part of ageing, how do we do it well?

As we get older, we must inevitably live with an accumulation of loss, because we’ve had longer to love. Love has a huge impact on our brains: they are literally rewired by our relationships. When someone dies, our brains struggle.  We cannot understand where they are, or why they have gone. We try to locate them in time and in space.

How we cope with our emotionally overloaded brains in times of grief, and how it shapes us, is the subject of our latest blog post - link in bio.
